In 1964, Kellogg’s introduced a product called "Country Squares," which were the "ugly" unfrosted pastries designed to be heated in a toaster. Clearly, "Country Squares" didn’t resonate well so in 1967, Kellogg’s relaunched the product as "Pop-Tarts," a name that hinted at their "pop-up" action. With the introduction of frosted varieties and a wide range of flavors, Pop-Tarts were a hit.

The success of Pop-Tarts quickly led to competition. General Mills launched their own version called "Toast’em Pop-Ups" in the late 1960s, while other brands introduced similar products to capture a share of the growing market.
